Dithiocarbamic Acid, CS(NH2)(SH)

Dithiocarbamic Acid or Thiolthioncarbamic Acid, CS(NH2)(SH), is obtained from its ammonium salt, which is formed by the combination of carbon disulphide with dry ammonia in the presence of alcohol, the salt crystallising in prisms. Hydrochloric acid causes separation of the acid from an aqueous solution of the ammonium salt in the form of an unstable oil, which crystallises below 10° C., smells of hydrogen sulphide, is acid in reaction, and easily decomposes into hydrogen sulphide and thiocyanic acid.
